The village of Copacabana is located on the shore of Lake Titicaca, about 3 hours' drive from La Paz and from Puno. For Bolivians, whose country has no access to the sea, it serves as a kind of seaside resort, a place to relax at 3,800 meters altitude! There are therefore a few hotels, mainly along the lake, but very few of 3* category or above.
Copacabana is known as an important pilgrimage site, in honor of the Black Virgin. Truck drivers and bus drivers from Bolivia and Peru come here to have their vehicles blessed.
Surprisingly, Copacabana, a town of a few thousand inhabitants, has a basilica of a size that is surprising relative to the size of the village, and which is well worth a visit.
You can also go up the Calvario hill overlooking the village. The elevation gain isn't very significant, but due to the high altitude, you'll likely arrive at the top out of breath. From the top, you'll enjoy a magnificent view over Lake Titicaca and over Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna.
Copacabana is also the starting point for an excursion to Isla del Sol, the largest island on Lake Titicaca, located an hour and a half away by boat. According to legend, this is the island from which Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, the founders of the Inca empire, set out. Crossing the island from north to south can be done on foot in half a day (about 10 kilometers) and offers splendid views over the lake and the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Real in Bolivia. It is also possible to do a 2-day excursion with one night on the island.
